Avocets and terns nest on platforms and islets at Pomorie Lake

In the current week we have registered nesting of Avocets (Recurvirostra avosetta), Little (Sterna albifrons) and Common terns (Sterna hirundo) on platforms and isltes in the southwestern part of the lagoon. We have counted about 25 pairs of avocet, 20 pairs of Common terns and at least 3 pairs of Little terns. In the past two years until now only Common terns were nesting on these. Water level of the lagoon is still rather high for the season and probably that is the reason for preference by birds of these facilities that are higher and provide suitable nesting habitat. Thus the efforts of Green Balkans NGO volunteers that have participated in the conservation holidays at Pomorie Lake during past two years have proven very successful and supported nesting of water birds at the site!  We would like to express our gratefulness to all participants in the Green Balkans long-term program for conservation of Pomorie Lake. Without your support it would not have been possible to save the water birds that have chosen Pomorie Lake as their home!

Island habitats of colonially nesting water birds at the Southern and central parts of Pomorie Lake, created and maintained by volunteers of the society through the years already host several thousand breeding pairs of protected species like Sandwich tern (Sterna sandvicensis)), Little tern (Sterna albifrons), Common tern (Sterna hirundo), Gull-billed tern (Sterna nilotica), Mediterranean gull (Larus melanocephalus), Avocet (Recurvisrostra avosetta) and Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus).
